Hangover Q & A

What is a hangover?

After a night out where you have a few too many alcoholic drinks, you're almost certain to wake up the following morning suffering from a hangover. That means you experience unpleasant symptoms such as:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dry mouth and tongue
  • Muscle aches
  • Memory loss
  • Shivers
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Diarrhea

These hangover symptoms are due to the effects of alcohol. While in small quantities, alcohol doesn't cause too much harm, it's toxic and severely dehydrating in larger quantities. It can take hours or even days to rehydrate your body and remove the buildup of toxins from your tissues, and leave you feeling pretty miserable along the way.

What can I do about my hangover?

The best way to avoid the symptoms of a hangover is not to consume too much alcohol. However, if you like to indulge once in a while, try to drink water in between the alcoholic drinks to ward off dehydration.

When you wake with a hangover, take it easy to give your body time to recover, drink small amounts of water regularly (having a large glass of water could make you vomit), and take an over-the-counter painkiller for the headache.

Even better, book a session at MyNP Eccentric IV Hydration Services, where Dr. McFarland can boost the recovery process with an IV infusion.

How do IV infusions help with a hangover?

IV infusions help you recover from a hangover by replacing lost fluids using a saline solution that’s safe and effective when introduced directly to your blood. The saline solution doesn't just replace fluids — it also restores the electrolytes your body loses when you've been drinking alcohol.

Hangover IV infusions contain minerals like magnesium and zinc that support electrolyte function. Magnesium helps to ease your headache, while zinc is effective in easing digestive system symptoms, particularly diarrhea.

The fatigue and headache typical of a hangover are partly due to capillary constriction. Dr. McFarland's IV infusions for hangovers contain B complex vitamins, including folic acid and vitamin B12.

These vitamins improve blood vessel dilation and boost energy. Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) can treat your headache, while vitamin B1 (thiamine) aids detoxification.

Your hangover IV infusion also contains Toradol, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug for pain, and Zofran for nausea. Using intravenous delivery provides much faster results than taking water, electrolytes, and medication orally.
